So, yesterday there was a tweet retweeted onto my timeline that asked for best-selling authors of color in YA. That got me thinking. The field of African American young adult writers is already minuscule.

Growing up, I read excellent young adult fiction, mostly by white authors. Lately, however, there has been a surge of Black, Asian, and Latino young adult authors writing books with protagonists of color and the issues they face. This is far from an exhaustive list.
But to her it felt deeply personal. Thomas was a college student in Jackson, Miss. She was shocked when some of her white classmates said he had probably deserved it. She responded with a short story about a teenage girl who is drawn to activism after a white officer shoots her childhood best friend.
