Some were put on the registry when they were as young as eight years old. The information from these registries lives forever in electronic databases. Once children are labeled as sex offenders, they carry that label throughout their lives, even if they are removed from the registry later. Young people who commit sexual offenses should be held accountable for their actions, but sanctions must be developmentally appropriate.

Sex offenders must register periodically with state authorities for years after release, and their status as a sex offender affects and limits many aspects of their lives.
When Ken Thornsberry was in high school, he did something a lot of high school students do: He had sex with his teenage girlfriend. As a result, he spent the bulk of his early adulthood behind bars. Thornsberry was an year-old senior when he met his high school girlfriend, Emily Lester, who was a year-old freshman at the time.
