Bottom Dollar Food to close all 66 stores
The discount grocery store's parent company announced in November that it was selling the locations to Aldi, another discount grocery chain. Bottom Dollar's 66 stores in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh regions had been expected to close by Thursday. The Catasauqua couple sang the praises Thursday of the Bottom Dollar at the Valley Plaza shopping center in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, despite learning that the chain will be closing soon. The company that owns the discount grocery chain is closing 66 stores, including eight in the Lehigh Valley and one each in Quakertown and Reading, just four years after introducing the brand locally. Bottom Dollar's owner, the Delhaize Group, plans to sell the locations and other assets to another discount grocer, Aldi Inc. Delhaize said it will no longer operate in the discount segment of food retail in the United States and instead will focus on its core operations in the traditional supermarket segment.
